Vulnerabilities

A critical score is only the beginning of a patch decision

Exposure, exploitation, and business context belong beside the severity number.

Severity scores help teams communicate technical risk. They do not describe every detail of a deployment. A vulnerable component that is directly exposed to the internet may need a different response from the same component inside a tightly controlled environment.

Start with a reliable inventory

Identify the installed version, the affected feature, and the systems that can reach it. Confirm applicability against the vendor’s advisory rather than relying only on a product name in a scanner result.

Add evidence of exploitation

A vendor advisory or an authoritative exploited-vulnerability catalogue can inform urgency. Record the source and the date so the decision can be reviewed as information changes.

Close the loop

After applying an update or mitigation, verify the effective version and test the relevant service. Track exceptions with an owner and a review date.
